Is Windshield Repair or Replacement Covered? | How to Insurance | 042

Hi, I’m Peter!

Welcome to HOW TO INSURANCE

Helping YOU understand insurance,

building CONFIDENCE for your future!

Recently, one of my clients called me and said: “my windshield got damaged and I’m not sure what to do, can you help?”

I answered “absolutely” and started finding out more information.

Thankful no one was hurt and the only damage was the windshield, but it definitely, needed to be replaced completely, not just repaired.

So this brings up the common question that everyone should understand about their auto insurance.

Question:

Is Windshield Repair or Replacement Covered?

This is one of the most common ways your car can get damaged and you might be looking at your auto insurance to help you out.

Now, keep in mind that auto insurance should be looked at for major damage and liability, like in a car accident.

You shouldn’t expect your auto insurance to pay for little things like changing your oil.

However, there is good news - Windshield repair is one of the benefits of auto insurance!

Answer:

Yes, windshield “repair” is covered

Most carriers (at least the ones I represent) will offer “Free Windshield Repair” without you making a claim or paying a deductible. If you have a rock chip of small crack, often times the windshield can just be repaired and your insurance will pay for it.

Ask your insurance broker, on how to use your carrier’s “Free Windshield Repair” feature.

But what if your windshield is broken and shattered and needs to be replaced?

Windshield replacements can cost around $250-350… so it would be nice to get that covered.

Answer:

No, windshield “replacement” is not automatically included… but it is a feature you can ADD!

This feature comes under your “comprehensive deductible”.

This is the part of your car insurance that covers any damage when you’re not driving your car. For example, if a tree branch fell on your car or someone broke in or stole it… those would be comprehensive claims with the comprehensive deductible.

Most insurance carriers will offer a comprehensive deductible “with glass” or “with full glass” or with “$50 deductible for glass”.

Just add this feature on, for about $2 a month… and then windshield or any window/glass replacement will be free of charge!

In the story with this client, their comprehensive deductible happened to be $500, they didn’t elect to add the “with glass” feature, but the windshield was costing them $320, so they paid out of pocket and without a claim.

While you never know when you’ll have to repair or replace glass, the strategy I always recommend is to have a higher comprehensive deductible and add “with glass”.

Then you’ll save money and be fully covered!

Next Steps:

  1. Contact your Insurance Broker.

  2. ADD Windshield “Replacement” (Glass coverage)

  3. Build confidence for your future!
