Hi, this is Peter, your insurance broker.

building confidence for your future!

Today, we are discussing…

How To Get Health Insurance Mid-Year (Special Eligibility Period)

Health insurance is one of the most important ways to protect your family medically and financially.

However, it’s super common nowadays to NOT get your health insurance through an employer, but rather to get it as an individual or family.

When you find yourself in a time of transition from your job, whether you lost your job or left to start your own business, getting new health insurance can be a top concern!

Also, health insurance is very different than other insurance policies: you can’t just enroll anytime you want. Open Enrollment is every November 1 through December 15, so what if you missed this??

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about enrolling in Health Insurance:

  1. Where do you get health insurance for you and your family?

  2. When can you get health insurance for yourself and your family?

  3. Is there a special enrollment timeframe you need to follow?

  4. What if I missed Open Enrollment?

  5. When will it start? Mid-month or on the 1st of the month?

  6. How can I afford it? Are there discounts?

  7. What documentation do I need?

Here are some Good News Answers for you!

#1 You don’t have to do it alone. Let a broker help you at no extra cost!

Years ago when I made the transition away from a job, before I was a broker…I was so confused and a little panicked as to where and how to get health insurance for my family. Luckily, I was able to find an insurance broker who walked me through the steps. This service is free to you and is what I now specialize in as an insurance broker!

An experienced insurance broker will be your guide on how to apply via your state or federal marketplace and how to get the best benefits at the lowest cost.

#2 Special Eligibility Period (SEP)

This is the official term you’re looking for. If you’re in need of health insurance during the middle of the year, you may qualify for a “Special Eligibility Period” or SEP. This is different than Open Enrollment in November and December which everyone qualifies for.

In general, when you “lose” your current health insurance, move to a different city or get pregnant, you have a 60-day window of time to select a new plan on the individual marketplace.

As your broker, how to apply and they will make it simple and clear for you.

#3 You Likely Qualify for Advanced Premium Tax Credits

Health insurance can be very expensive, however, the vast majority of people will qualify for a “discount”, called Advanced Premium Tax Credits, based on their household adjusted gross income.

Work with your broker to make sure you complete the health application correctly and get the maximum benefit you qualify for! You’ll likely be surprised by how affordable it can be.

BOTTOM LINE:

When you transition away from employer-based healthcare, you’ll have a 60-day Special Eligibility Period, when you can work with your broker, apply and enroll in a new affordable health insurance plan for your family!
